ISQS 3358 BI Project

In this project up to 3-4 students form a team to fulfill a data mart development project.

Please be notified that the instructions for the term project have been modified, but compatible to the previous ones. Students can choose among three types of projects:

-       Type 1: Data warehousing oriented

-       Type 2: Business analytics oriented

-       Type 3: Big data technology oriented


The project includes deliverables in four different stages:


Stage 1: Getting started with term project

1)     Project orientation

2)     Form project teams


Stage 2 (10%): Project proposal. Due March 30, Wednesday.


The selection of the project mainly relies on the availability of the dataset and your understanding of the business story about the data. The deliverable is a project proposal in 2-3 pages, containing (1) Project topic, (2) Project type (data warehousing, business analytics, or big data technology), (3) Key resource description (dataset availability for Type 1 or 2, computer resource for Type 3), (4) Optional contents: A conceptual dimensional model for Type 1, Analytical themes for Type 2, and Big data service context for Type 3.



What is “analytic themes”? They are business needs or requirements for the project. They can be obtained by interviewing people in the business or a thorough investigation. Analytic themes reflect the major challenges and opportunities an organization is facing. Based on the analytic themes you will be able to determine the goal and objectives of data mart development. 

What is “A conceptual dimensional model”? This is a kind of logic design of the data mart with main table names but without much details in the tables. The draft of the dimensional model in a diagram format to be implemented later.


Stage 3 (40%) Due April 25, Monday before 11:59p


Type 1 (Data warehousing): Data mart development. Based on the data you collected in the first stage, the tasks in this stage: (1) dimensional model design (at least four dimensions), (2) data mart and data mart populating, and (3) preliminary data analysis. 5-8 pages including figures or screenshots of the designed model.


Type 2 (Business analytics): Data mart is optional. Based on the data collected in the first stage, the tasks in this stage: (1) Detailed analytical themes, (2) data analysis, and (3) preliminary data visualization. 5-8 pages including figures or screenshots of the results.


Type 3 (Big data technology): System construction and demo applications implementation. The tasks in this stage: (1) Big data system architecture description, and (2) demonstrative applications. 5-8 pages including figures or screenshots of the system and the applications.


Both hardcopy and electronic copy are required. Deliver the hard copy to TA, and email the e-copy in the name “ISQS3358-stage2-<team#>” to with a subject title: “ISQS3358t-Stage2-<team number>”.


Stage 4 (30%): Team presentations (mainly analysis report). Due May 2

There is No in-class presentation, but sending in a 10-minute video for review. Everyone in a project team must present certain contents in the video.


Stage 5 (20%): Term project report. Due May 9, Monday.

The report contains:

1)     Cover page

2)     A compilation of proposal and the report provided in stage 2, plus

3)     4-6 findings from the data analysis (Type 1 & 2), or demonstrative applications (Type 3).

4)     Enhanced diagram/charts/tables generated, and with explanations. 

The report’s length is 8-12 pages. A hardcopy of the report will be submitted for grading, plus an electronic copy emailed to


For Type 1 & Type 2 projects, if the original data is not clean enough, you need to preprocess the data. You may generate new dimensional tables from the main dataset as you have done in the exercises.
